NanoScience Students in the clean room. ns class 1

Attention Students!

This four day program will introduce you to the world at the molecular and atomic level - the nanoscale. Research and science at the nanoscale is changing the way we view materials science, chemistry, physics and biology. This program consists of a lecture program that will introduce you to the concepts of science at the atomic level and cover practical examples of how nanoscience is impacting our lives today. Supplementing the lectures are a series of hands-on labs where students will create gold nanoparticles and nanowires, study non-newtonian fluids and surface tension and evaluate the mechanical properties of different materials. We will also use the Atomic Force Microscope, Scanning Tunneling Microscope and the Hysitron Nanomechanical Measurement System to study the results of our lab work. On Wednesday we will travel to the University of Minnesota to tour the nanofab clean room (in "bunny suits") and visit the Characterization Lab where students will observe and operate state of the art tools used to investigate the nanoscale.

An interest in science and math and a willingness to explore and learn is all that is required for this class.
