about the key

discoveries and inventions

that have revolutionized

the nano world.

SEM

A central challenge in teaching nano topics is that the particles and molecules involved are invisible to the naked eye. Assesssing materials at the atomic and molecular level requires special tools like the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Understanding of this tool is critical to working in any nanoscience or emerging technology job.

Develop skills in key areas such as sample preparation, SEM operation,  learn about SEM parts and function, and check out some of the virtual imaging labs across the country.

Scale

Precise sense of scale is essential to understanding structures and systems in the study of nanoscience.

Develop an understanding about the conversion of scales (mainly between macro, micro, nano), laws of exponents, and build your understanding about the relative sizes of some objects found in those scales.

Nanoparticles

Many beneficial nanoparticles are being discovered and even some being manufactured to the benefit of our health and quality of life. Nanoparticles are particles between 1 and 100 nanometers in size. Their small size, high surface area and improved physical, chemical and biological properties make them a highly focused area of nanoscience.

Make yourself familiar with some of the most prominent types: Carbon nanotubes, Gold (and Silver) nanoparticles, Quantum dots, the relationship between volume and surface area, and priorities of forces at the nanoscale.

Get Nano Geeked!

A Nano Geek is a student or learner of anything nano with no fear to explore, ask questions, ask for MORE, and show enthusiasm! How do you get Nano Geeked? Try out some of the Nano Geeked games and tools here. If you do, your Nano vocabulary will  rock, your skill using the tools for nano size material will amaze, and your drive for learning more and helping others learn won’t be stopped.

WARNING! You can start here, but DON’T STOP here, this could be just the beginning to a rewarding career in nanotechnology where entry level salaries average $40,000.

Let's Start with a Couple of Definitions

Nanoscience is the ability to observe, manipulate and measure things at the atomic and molecular level.

Nanotechnology is the ability to use what is learned from nanoscience to create, modify or improve things on a basic level.

Play Small Beginnings

Now that you know what’s nano and how the science and technology is defined, take advantage of a great way to build your vocabulary, one very important aspect in studying and working in the nano world: know your nano terms, your nano history, and nano tools. A Jeopardy Like game has been created for this purpose coming soon.
