DIY Alert – My-Oh-My Micelles

DIY Alert – My-Oh-My Micelles

We get asked all the time… “How can I bring nano into my biotechnology class?” Well here you go, our 7th DIY module release does just that. This module introduces micelles (pronounced MY-sels) and the concept of critical micelle concentration (CMC). Micelles have important applications in biotechnology. Micelles are sometimes used to deliver drugs to targeted organs or tissues in the body. Micelles are also sometimes used to deliver genes into plant cells for agricultural applications. This module explores micelles as a demonstration of the intersection between nanotechnology and biotechnology. The module includes a laboratory activity that uses a surfactant and dye to allow students to experiment with micelle formation.

The third in the Nano-Link DIY Collection has arrived. Concrete is the most widely used building material in the world with 23 billion tons per year worldwide. Nanotechnology is looking for ways to make concrete lighter and stronger. This new DIY module introduces the nanotechnology processes and methods being tested by industry to prepare strong and lightweight cementitious products and systems. In the activity you’ll microgrind the constituents of concrete to make “nano” particles, then test and observe the changes in property as a result. Our DIY modules include an instructor guide and slides to use for presentation and background information. Our DIY modules were designed to get hands-on with nano concepts.
